GISCE Mission

The Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence (GISCE) within the Geography Department at George Mason University is directed at addressing theoretical issues of Geographic Information Science (GIS) and practical applications of innovative GIS technology. GISCE is serving faculty, staff, students, and a broad community of GIS users on the GMU campuses and in Northern Virginia by providing education and training, research and development, and advising and consulting services. Central goals of GISCE include promoting GIS as a new interdisciplinary science as well as a technological scientific tool; building a strong, unique, nationally-recognized geospatial educational curriculum at all levels; creating a unique multi-level warehouse of spatial data for George Mason’s departments/colleges/centers, Northern Virginia, and the DC area; developing GIS data and software standards, and providing a hands-on experience in GIS digital technology to Mason’s students.
